Exeter City Police senior officers and sergeants (circa 1880)

This photograph shows that the senior officers as well as the sergeants wore helmets at this time, although their frock coats were more ornate, and that the sergeants (in common with many other forces of the day) wore chevrons only on the right sleeves of their tunics. Note also that beside each of their collar numbers is found the castle emblem which was retained by the city police throughout its life.
