Constable Peter Nordqvist (1965)

Constable Peter Nordqvist, seen at the Paris Street police pillar (at the junction with Heavitree Road), shortly before the 1966 amalgamation of the Exeter City Police with the Devon Constabulary to form the Devon & Exeter Police. These police pillars gradually superseded the former police boxes and were used on city beats before the days of the personal radio. They provided a telephone connection to the police station, for the public as well as for police officers, and were also used as a fixed point for the sergeant to meet the patrolling constable on the beat.
